Matisse and Me

Nude with White Scarf
Matisse 1909
Statens Museum for Kunst

It’s time to own up to my love affair with Matisse. I am blatantly guilt-free despite the duration of this relationship.  My husband is a generous man. He turns a blind eye to the longing gazes that I cast at another.

A few weeks ago I had the unadulterated pleasure of spending an hour with 18 pieces of Matisse’s work in a quiet museum gallery, virtually alone, as if a universal message gone out to leave us alone. Fate intervened I suppose.

Even after so many years into this relationship something inexplicable happened. Molecules shifted and I left the room a changed woman. What happened there was deeply internal. The words to understand and so begin describe this experience remain unknown to me. But this week after a long time away from the studio it was through the end of a brush that the experience began to take some form.  My breathing has finally returned to normal.

2011 Civic Square Fencing

Images of Red Line and World View I have been selected for inclusion in the Seattle Civic Square Fencing project. That means they will appear on panels installed on a fence surrounding the Civic Square construction project between Third and Fourth Avenues and Cherry and James in downtown Seattle. I'll keep you posted about the installation date.
