Late Afternoon Sun

As everyone in the Western Washington is well aware, we received a record amount of rain in August.   With high humidity and warm temperatures I've felt a bit dislocated lately.  How did Seattle become the tropics?   For once my garden (and roof) is lush and green even at the end of summer.  Then along comes September, which has slowly turned into a golden jewel.

Weighted yet light as air.  How can a rock be both?  A perfect paradox.  Taken on my first beach walk Saturday morning.  

Centrum Residency

On Friday I arrived at Fort Worden for a 2-wk artist residency at Centrum near Port Townsend, WA. Here's what I did my first night: went to watch American Graffiti under the stars while sitting on a bale of hay in downtown Port Townsend.  It was film festival week-end!

Alas, after a crazy busy week of hanging a large show, having the opening, then packing and leaving town on Friday, it was not in the cards for me to make it through the entire movie.  Some how that seemed right.  It was a bit of a repeat of earlier times when I used to fall asleep in the back seat of the Rambler station wagon at the SnoKing Drive-Inn surrounded by my family.  If memory serves, I first saw American Graffiti there.

It's very good to be back here at Centrum with another kind of family.  I've been coming to this part of world since I was very young, camping and walking it's beaches and bunkers (where Richard Gere cried out in An Officer and a Gentleman, "I got no where else to go!"

Right now this seems like the only place to be.  It's a bit of a homecoming you might say.

Please join me at the opening of my upcoming exhibition, Further Dislocations and Longings, at Mithun Architecture, 1201 Alaskan Way, Suite 200, Seattle, on Thursday, September 23 from 5-9 pm.  This show represents my ongoing exploration into the dynamic tension that exits between reality and dreams of home, and includes work in a variety of mediums including acrylic paintings, mixed-media pieces and sculptures. 

This is the first time that my 2- and 3-D pieces have been shown together outside of my studio and I'm very excited to share them with you.  The space at Mithun is large and wonderfully designed.  It's a treat to show in their space, which is located in a large building on Pier 56 on the Seattle waterfront.  It is, of course, the perfect place for this show.
