Matter

As I've culled through work completed during the past year in preparation for The Truth of What I See at Core Gallery in February, this painting, Matter, never fell off of the list. It was begun in late 2010 and then turned toward the wall for months, yet not forgotten. In a sense it took on a life of it's own and that's when things get exciting in the studio. But is was a slowly emerging life. Periodically Matter was pulled back out to receive more attention, and sometimes paint. That process was repeated several times until it felt complete. Each painting has a life of it's own, and that means in terms of the process as well as the resulting imagery. That is the fact of the matter.

Youth In Focus at Core Gallery

Youth in Focus is an "after school program that uses intensive photography training as a tool to help disadvantaged teens develop personal voice, positive identity, social skills and artistic skills. We offer free, multi-level classes for teens ages 13-19 in both film and digital photography, and advanced students participate in our job skills project shooting assignments for hire. Classes are taught by professional teaching artists and supported by volunteer adult mentors. In this way we create a community of support around our students that both encourages and challenges them on their journey to a positive adulthood."

The Truth of What I See

You might say that defining truth is a worthy goal, but it is often problematic. The Truth of What I See is my upcoming exhibition at Core Gallery. It contains new work about the evolutionary process of painting and working toward moments of clarity. The work is a playful visual reflection of a year-long process. It began with a deep exploration into various movements in art history, including Bauhaus, the Fauves, Abstract Expressionism, as well as the works of master painters who happen to be women. Please stop by!
