Dislocation appears in many forms for many reasons. For instance nine hours of jet lag will do it. Going from Paris to Seattle will do it. Going from the airport to the hospital where a family member who became ill while you were away will do it. It happens whenever our emotions grapple with a sudden change of circumstances.
There are many positive benefits to travel, of course, one of them being the ability to gain new insights and perspectives. I sat next to a nice guy from Oregon on the airplane who was flying home with his family, including his 5-year-old son, after a month’s stay in Paris. He told me that his son had had it with Paris after three weeks. He announced that he was tired of all those old buildings. As the airplane made its final approach at Seatac the 5-year old announced, “Look at all those cool, new buildings Dad!”
Paris is a dream that has once again slipped away. My compass has brought me back home and has located me again with family and friends who are showering love to help one of their own move toward recovery. Any way you look at it, it’s good to be home.
