Mary Heilmann
"Painting a line across canvas with a brush is similar to the motion of a wave breaking." Mary Heilmann
Hip hip hurray! Congratulations to Mary Heilmann. She recently was named Artist of the Year by the Gueiggenheim during its inaugural Annual Art Awards. As you know, Mary Heilmann is an inspiration of mine (see my Oct 11, 2009 post) and I could not be more thrilled that she was chosen for this much deserved honor.
Here's what Douglas Britt at the Houston Chronical has to say about Mary Heilmann's appearance on Art:21:
". . . she's just the perfect combination of lively, mellow, battle-scarred, funny and down-to-earth. You could hang out with her forever. And she's someone who was able to learn from artists who had lost faith in painting without giving up on it herself. She's also one of the few artists this season who's not surrounded by an army of assistants. Not that there's anything wrong with the latter approach, but it's still a pleasure to see Heilmann plugging away on her own."
